Good day,
I have a general question how the OpenSearch upgrade works. I have version 2.0.0 installed as tarball and would like to perform an upgrade to the latest version. Same for OpenSearch Dashboards. I did not find any documentation for this issue…
Have a nice day and thank you in advance.
Hi @user2111 -
I think there’s a few ways you can accomplish this based on whether you can stand some down time in your cluster or not.
Option one would be to stop OpenSearch and OpenSearch Dashboards long enough to take a copy of your data, untar the newer versions and then start back up. Your data should be perfectly fine.
Option two would be to bring up another OpenSearch node, join it to the cluster and then make sure that everything has a replica there. This should leave your data available for searching while you take the first node down, perform the backup (just to be safe) and then untar the newer version.
The most important thing is to make sure you have a copy of the contents of your data folder in case something horrible happens.
Did you need anything more specific than that? Perhaps its time the community got together and write a proper guide. That’d be a rad contribution for Hacktoberfest.
Thanks for the question! Let me know if that helps!

Hello @nateynate
Sorry for the late reply. Thank you very much for your suggestions. I think this is a bit too complex to do it regularly, so I think I wait a few months till I do the update.
It is strange, that there is no Debian package where doing an update would be very easy…
That is a great idea! I have a feeling that the documentation is very fragmentary, a lot of things are missing and have to be found out by trial and error or with the forum. So if there are people working on a user guide this would be very helpful
Have a nice day!
