Was wondering is there any plans to support elastic 8.x ?.
support how? can you clarify what you are looking to achieve?
My understanding is the Opensearch uses OSS elastic as backend and current OpenSearch uses 7.x backend.
Was wondering if using OSS ELastic 8.x was in the roadmap. Nothing in particular other than performance enhancement supposedly in OSS ES 8.x.
Thanks

I’m not sure what you mean here. To take a stab at answering your question, Elastic 8.x has the SSPL license, and OpenSearch is fully Apache-v2. Mixing the two would defeat the purpose of what OpenSearch is trying to achieve – a fully Apach2-v2 distribution.
You can certainly ask the community to make the performance enhancements that you need.
just to clarify: OpenSearch is not built on top of Elasticsearch - it is a fork of Elasticsearch (specifically it forked off of the Apache 2.0 version of ES 7.10.2). meaning that since that moment the two have become independent projects and have been slowly diverging ever since.
in contrast, the predecessor to OpenSearch, OpenDistro for Elasticsearch, was “just” a bundle of plugins around Elasticsearch, where it was bound to specific ES versions. however, this has been discontinued when OpenSearch was started (which in turn was done due to the mentioned license change done by Elastic to Elasticsearch).
