OpenSearch Roadmap & Release Update

You might notice that the OpenSearch roadmap and release schedule has changed. A few additions and changes have shuffled priorities:

  • The team caught a bug in the Index Management plugin included with 1.0.0. The fix will be included in a patch release, version 1.0.1 .
  • To increase ongoing release velocity several engineers are temporarily focusing on automation work instead of roadmap features.
  • The OpenSearch project is now taking on client libraries for several languages which has also shifted engineering attention away from features.

The OpenSearch 1.0.1 patch release is planned for Aug 30, 2021. Until the above items are resolved the OpenSearch minor release cycle will be every 8 weeks. Based on this cadence, the release dates for OpenSearch 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 are set to Sept 14, 2021, Nov 9, 2021, and Jan 11, 2022 respectively. You can check out the roadmap for feature details in each release: https://github.com/orgs/opensearch-project/projects/1.

Is there somewhere we can see the timeline for when OpenSearch releases will become available on AWS OpenSearch domains?

For example, OpenSearch 1.1.0 was released on 2021-10-06, but as of today the latest version available on AWS is 1.0.

Hey @mSIGNIA - I don’t think there is a place where the AWS service team publicly puts dates on that. It’s fairly complex and it might not be all at once.

In a more general sense, I know there is a lot of work to tighten up the timeline between open source and service rollouts, so expect that to get closer in alignment over time.
