Also wondering the same. I found this other question Differences between legacy _template and _index_template discussing the differences between the legacy endpoint but no responses. Hoping that both will continue to function or that functionality could be merged?
@jong@sohonomo According to this comment _templates is a legacy feature.
Even when there is no ETA for _templates removal, I wouldn’t build any production solutions based on that.
