Use of 'extensions' directory during Opensearch StartUp

Versions (relevant - OpenSearch/Dashboard/Server OS/Browser):
Opensearch v2.7.0

Describe the issue:
There seems to be a dependency on directory /usr/share/opensearch/extensions during Opensearch StartUp.
This directory doesn’t exist in the previous Opensearch Versions.

Use of this directory and the contents inside is unclear yet. Can this be explained ??
