Recap: Washington DC OpenSearch User Group Meetup #2, August 13

We were back at Carahsoft in Reston on August 13 for the second Washington DC OpenSearch User Group meetup. Twelve people checked in, and what struck me was how many of them I was meeting for the first time. The room was almost entirely community, drawn by the same thing driving a lot of the project right now, which is how quickly OpenSearch is putting AI to work in service of better search.

Eric Pugh, OpenSearch Ambassador and co-founder of OpenSource Connections, presented “Putting Search Front and Center in the OpenSearch Project: Recapping a Year of Progress.” Eric sits on the OpenSearch Technical Steering Committee and runs the Search Technical Advisory Group, so he came at the year from that vantage point rather than as a straight feature tour.

The past year gave him plenty to work with. Agent Health brings a full observability stack to monitoring AI agents, which Eric expects to be the next big wave of data people need to manage. Agentic Relevance Tuning turns real search logs and click data into a way to improve your algorithm interactively. OpenSearch Launchpad gets you a working prototype search experience from local CSVs or PDFs. Migration tooling, nightly LLM as a Judge scoring, and interleaved A/B testing for the 3.x line all got airtime too.

The argument tying it together: search is moving from a keyword engine to an answer engine, and from there to what Eric called an action engine. The point is that relevance was always a proxy. Nobody runs a search for the joy of good results, they run it because they are trying to get something done, so the real measure is whether they booked the trip or walked away with the right repair kit. That is a higher bar, and it is why he makes the case for search as a first-class use case in OpenSearch, alongside the logs and observability work the platform has built such strength in.

Pizza, drinks, and a good pile of OpenSearch and Qmulos swag to take home. Thank you to Eric (@dep4b) for making the trip and giving us a captivating talk, to Kris Freedain (@kris) and the OpenSearch Project for covering the food, and to Carahsoft for hosting us at their headquarters again. This group does not happen without them.

What is next

We are targeting mid-October for meetup number three. Details to come once the date is locked. If the trend holds, October should be our biggest one yet.

We are also looking for speakers. If you are building something interesting on OpenSearch, whether it is a war story, a demo, or a half-formed idea you want to think out loud about, we want to hear it. This group is at its best when the talks come from the people in the room. Reach out and let us know what you have.

Join us on Meetup so you get the invite: OpenSearch Project Washington DC | Meetup

See you in October!
